The method of this Bible study is as follows: Titles, offices, names and/or attributes assigned by Old Testament, Holy Spirit inspired writers to YHWH/Adonai/El Shaddai (i.e. the Almighty God of the universe and of Israel's redemption) are listed first.
Another list follows - showing that same title, office, name and/or attribute is assigned by New Testament writers, inspired by the same Holy Spirit, to our Glorious Lord God and Savior, Jesus Christ!!!
Who is coming with all His holy ones? Listen to an early patriarch -
Jude 14, 15 - And about these also Enoch, in the seventh generation from Adam, prophesied, saying, "Behold, the Lord came with many thousands of His holy ones, to execute judgment upon all, and to convict all the ungodly of all their ungodly deeds which they have done in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him. "
By what name would Enoch, in the seventh generation from Adam, have known the Almighty God? It would not have been by the name Jesus. Yet, Who is coming according to the apostle John, exiled on Patmos?
Revelation 1:7 - Behold, He is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see Him, even those who pierced Him; and all the tribes of the earth will mourn over Him. Even so. Amen.
Paul DOES add the New Covenant Name of The Lord God, JESUS, as he echoes Enoch's words of long ago, adding more information also, under inspiration -
2 Thessalonians1:7 - 9 - ...and to give relief to you who are afflicted and to us as well when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with His mighty angels in flaming fire, dealing out retribution to those who do not know God and to those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. And these will pay the penalty of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power...
Who is the hope of God's people? Let Jeremiah tell us -
Jeremiah 17:13 - O Lord, the HOPE OF ISRAEL, all who forsake Thee will be put to shame. Those who turn away on earth will be written down, because they have forsaken the fountain of living water, even the Lord.
Paul speaks of the same One:
1 Timothy 1:1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus according to the commandment of God our Savior, and of CHRIST JESUS, WHO IS OUR HOPE...
Jeremiah also said that YHWH is the fountain of living water in Jeremiah 2:12,13, while Jesus says this -
John 7:38 - He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.
Where is that written in Scripture? Nowhere in so many words, but Jesus isn't mixed up, is He? Of course not! With Divine authority, He explains Scripture. This looks like a direct claim to being Jeremiah's Source of living waters! (Cf. Jeremiah 17:7,8)
Still comparing Scripture with Scripture, more and more of God's Truth about the Person of the Son is revealed...
All creatures change, only God is unchangeable, as the Psalmist says -
Psalm 102:25 - 27 - Of old Thou didst found the earth; and the heavens are the work of Thy hands. Even they will perish, but Thou dost endure; and all of them will wear out like a garment; like clothing Thou wilt change them, and they will be changed. But Thou art the same, and Thy years will not come to an end.
According to the inspired New Testament writer, God the Father applies those very words to God the Son!
Hebrews 1:8 - 13 - But of the Son He says, "Thy throne, O God, is forever and ever, and the righteous scepter is the scepter of His kingdom." Thou hast loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; therefore God, Thy God, hath anointed Thee with the oil of gladness above Thy companions." And, "Thou, Lord, in the beginning didst lay the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the works of Thy hands; they will perish, but Thou remainest; and they all will become old as a garment, and as a mantle Thou wilt roll them up; as a garment they will also be changed. But Thou art the same, and Thy years will not come to an end. " But to which of the angels has He ever said, "Sit at My right hand, until I make Thine enemies a footstool for Thy feet"?
Malachi also teaches us the changelessness of God Almighty -
Malachi 3:6 "For I, the Lord, do not change; therefore you, O sons of Jacob, are not consumed".
Jesus Christ has that Divine attribute of changelessness as well, which no mere creature could.
Hebrews 13:8 - Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today, yes and forever.
That mighty prophet who served during the exile spoke of a mysterious person, "The Branch", Who apparently is Jehovah!
Jeremiah 23:5,6 - "Behold, the days are coming," declares the Lord, "When I shall raise up for David a righteous Branch; and He will reign as king and act wisely, and do justice and righteousness in the land. In His days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely; and this is His name by which He will be called, 'Jehovah our RIGHTEOUSNESS.' "
Are the apostles confused? They seem to regard this as fulfilled in Christ!
1 Corinthians 1:30 - ...but by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and RIGHTEOUSNESS and sanctification, and redemption...
Romans 10:4 - For Christ is the end of the law for RIGHTEOUSNESS to everyone who believes.
Philippians 1:11 - ...having been filled with the fruit of RIGHTEOUSNESS which comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.
Christ's identity as Yahweh/Adonai/El Shaddai, God of the Old Testament - so woven into the fabric of Scripture! So God-like in its profound beauty and awesome mystery! Such a wonderful Savior!
