The method by which the majestic theme of the Deity of Christ has been demonstrated in this Jesus is God series of Bible studies is that of comparing Scripture with Scripture. In this way, a balanced theology is maintained. Thus, we have first listed Old Testament statements about Yahweh (or Jehovah, i.e. YHWH, El Shaddai, Adonai - GOD). Then, we have listed equivalent New Testament statements about the Lord Jesus Christ. In this way, we have begun to see the all-pervasive, grand truth of Christ's Deity. The Bible affirms nothing about YHWH/El Shaddai/Adonai that it does not affirm about Christ.
Before finding about His real bodily resurrection, two dejected disciples were on the road to a town called Emmaus. Suddenly, the risen Master appeared with them! (Read Luke 24:13 - 27). In this passage, Christ gently rebukes their "slowness of heart to believe". He tells them that all the Scriptures bear witness of His work of redemption, just accomplished ("It is finished!", he cried from the cross).
A similar situation is seen in Luke 24:36 - 53. In this passage, Jesus is demonstrating that He truly arose from the dead in His now glorified, physical body - the real human body in which He had died. He eats, says he is NOT just a spirit, etc. In the midst of this "hands-on teaching", He again says that "the law of Moses, the Psalms, and the Prophets" are written about HIM.
To His opponents, before His death and resurrection, He said this: "You search the Scriptures, because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is these that bear witness of ME" (John 5:39).
Compare that to this statement by Jehovah, the God of the Old Testament, through an Old Testament prophet:
Isaiah 42:8 - I am the Lord, that is My name; I will not give My glory to another, nor My praise to graven images.
The point is, as recorded in Revelation 19:10, "The testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy." All the Scriptures have Jesus Christ as the heart of their message! He IS the God of the Old Testament!
So far, comparing Scripture (Old Testament) with Scripture (New Testament), we have seen that the Lord Jesus Christ has these titles and offices:
He is the "Rock" of God's people
He is the "First and the Last"
He is the Creator
He is the ONLY Savior
He is the Light of the world
He is Judge of all
He is King of Kings, and Lord of Lords
He is the Good Shepherd
The following texts are some in which Jesus Christ is expressly designated GOD:
Titus 2:13 - looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus;
2 Peter 1:1 - Simon Peter, a bond-servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who have received a faith of the same kind as ours, by the righteousness of our God and Savior, Jesus Christ:
John 1:1 - In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
1Timothy 1:17 - Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.
Colossians 2:9 - For in Him all the fulness of Deity dwells in bodily form...
Acts 20:28 - Be on guard for yourselves and for all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood.
(Compare the above statement about "His own blood" with these passages -
Hebrews 9:12 - and not through the blood of goats and calves, but through His own blood, He entered the holy place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption.
Hebrews 13:12 - Therefore Jesus also, that He might sanctify the people through His own blood, suffered outside the gate.)
The only confidence of every Christian, his or her only hope in life or death, is the Lord Jesus Christ. On every one of its pages, the New Testament pleads with men to place their complete confidence in him:
Acts 26:15-18 - And I said, "Who art Thou, Lord?" And the Lord said, "I am Jesus Whom you are persecuting. But arise, and stand on your feet; for this purpose I have appeared to you, to appoint you a minister and a witness not only to the things which you have seen, but also to the things in which I will appear to you; delivering you from the Jewish people and from the Gentiles, to whom I am sending you, to open their eyes so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the dominion of Satan to God, in order that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who have been sanctified by FAITH IN ME."
Acts 24:24 - But some days later, Felix arrived with Drusilla, his wife who was a Jewess, and sent for Paul, and heard him speak about FAITH IN CHRIST JESUS.
Romans 3:22 - even the righteousness of God through FAITH IN JESUS CHRIST for all those who believe; for there is no distinction...
Galatians 2:16 - ...nevertheless knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the Law but through FAITH IN CHRIST JESUS, even we have BELIEVED IN CHRIST JESUS, that we may be justified by FAITH IN CHRIST, and not by the works of the Law; since by the works of the Law shall no flesh be justified.
Galatians 3:22 - But the Scripture has shut up all men under sin, that the promise by FAITH IN JESUS CHRIST might be given to those who believe.
Revelation 14:12 - Here is the perseverance of the saints who keep the commandments of God and their FAITH IN JESUS.
Many other Scriptures could be martialled to show that our absolute confidence is to be in the One Who is the Son of Man and the Son of God!!! Of putting confidence in mere men it is written:
Psalm 146:3-5 - Do not trust in princes, in mortal man, in whom there is no salvation. His spirit departs, he returns to the earth; in that very day his thoughts perish. How blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord his God;
Jeremiah 17:5 - Thus says the Lord, "Cursed is the man who trusts in mankind and makes flesh his strength, and whose heart turns away from the Lord."
Of the One Whom we are to trust implicitly, Scripture says:
Jeremiah 17:7,8 - Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord and whose trust is the Lord. For he will be like a tree planted by the water, that extends its roots by a stream and will not fear when the heat comes; but its leaves will be green, and it will not be anxious in a year of drought nor cease to yield fruit."
The only confidence of every Christian, her or his only hope in life or death, is the Lord Jesus Christ. On every page, the New Testament pleads with you and me to place our complete confidence in him.
Exactly WHO, then, must He be?
