Jesus is God, Part 1

This Jesus is God series of Bible studies came into being as a result of encounters, debates, and discussions with members of the religious group popularly known as Jehovah's Witnesses. As many know, the beliefs held by this group are outside those of historic, orthodox (i.e. Bible-believing) Christianity. It is hoped that these studies will help the Christian to confidently proclaim and defend the Biblical truth that our Lord Jesus Christ is not less than the Almighty God of the universe incarnate - "come in the flesh", as the apostle John put it.

This is the first part in a list of the many, many passages which demonstrate the Deity of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is beyond dispute that He is to be identified as the LORD: that is, Jehovah or Yahweh (YHWH), the God of the Old Testament. Consider the joint impact of all these verses and passages! Be a real STUDENT of the Bible, like the Bereans (Acts 17:11) who carefully considered what the Scriptures taught. If you wish to know the truth about the glorious person of the Lord Jesus Christ, carefully and prayerfully compare Scripture with Scripture, and you will find the truth.

The format for this study will be as follows: Old Testament passages that manifest God as possessing a certain title, office, name, or attribute will be listed, followed by New Testament passages which apply those same titles, offices, names or attributes to our Lord Jesus Christ. Since there is only one God, the conclusion is inescapable.

Scripture quotations are from the New American Standard Bible. It is ALWAYS appropriate to read shorter verses or passages of the Bible in their greater context.

OLD TESTAMENT, GOD AS THE ROCK

Deuteronomy 32:4 - The Rock! His work is perfect, For all His ways are just; a God of faithfulness and without injustice, righteous and upright is He.
2 Samuel 22:32 - For who is God, besides the Lord? And who is a rock, besides our God?
Isaiah 8:13,14 - It is the *LORD of hosts whom you should regard as holy. And He shall be your fear, and He shall be your dread. Then He shall become a sanctuary; but to both houses of Israel, a stone to strike and a rock to stumble over, and a snare and a trap for the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
(*ed: the all caps "LORD" used in many Bibles refers specifically to the name YHWH, i.e. Jehovah or Yahweh)
Isaiah 17:10A - For you have forgotten the God of your salvation and have not remembered the rock of your refuge.
Psalm 18:2 - The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge; my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.

NEW TESTAMENT, CHRIST AS THE ROCK

Acts 4:10,11 - Let it be known to all of you, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead - by this name this man stands here before you in good health. He is the stone which was rejected by you, the builders, but which became the very corner stone...
1 Corinthians 10:4 - and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they were drinking from a spiritual rock which followed them; and the rock was Christ.
1 Peter 2:6-8 - For this is contained in Scripture: "Behold I lay in Zion a choice stone, a precious corner stone, And he who believes in Him shall not be disappointed." This precious value, then, is for you who believe. But for those who disbelieve, "The stone which the builders rejected, This became the very corner stone," and, "a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense"; for they stumble because they are disobedient to the word, and to this doom they were also appointed.

OLD TESTAMENT, GOD AS "THE FIRST AND THE LAST"

Isaiah 44:6 - Thus says the Lord, the King of Israel and his Redeemer, the Lord of hosts: "I am the first and I am the last, And there is no God besides Me".
Isaiah 48:12 - "Listen to Me, O Jacob, even Israel whom I called; I am He, I am the first, I am also the last".

NEW TESTAMENT, CHRIST AS "THE FIRST AND THE LAST"

Revelation 1:17,18 - And when I saw Him, I fell at His feet as a dead man. And He laid His right hand upon me, saying, "Do not be afraid; I am the first and the last, and the living One; and I was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of death and of Hades."
Revelation 2:8 - And to the angel of the church in Smyrna write: The first and the last, who was dead, and has come to life, says this...
Revelation 22:13 (Christ speaking) - "I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end."

OLD TESTAMENT, GOD AS CREATOR

Genesis 1:1 - In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
Nehemiah 9:6 - Thou alone art the Lord. Thou hast made the heavens, the heaven of heavens with all their host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them. Thou dost give life to all of them, and the heavenly host bows down before Thee.
Job 33:4 - The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life.
Isaiah 40:28 - Do you not know? Have you not heard? The everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, does not become weary or tired. His understanding is inscrutable.

NEW TESTAMENT, CHRIST AS CREATOR

John 1:3 - All things came into being by Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.
John 1:10 - He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him.
Colossians 1:16 - For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities - all things have been created by Him and for Him.
Hebrews 1:10-14 - And, "Thou, Lord, in the beginning didst lay the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the works of Thy hands; they will perish, but Thou remainest; and they all will become old as a garment, and as a mantle Thou wilt roll them up; as a garment they will also be changed. But Thou art the same, and Thy years will not come to an end." But to which of the angels has He ever said, "Sit at My right hand, until I make Thine enemies a footstool for Thy feet"? Are they not all ministering spirits, sent out to render service for the sake of those who will inherit salvation?
