Jesus is God, Part 9

The Epistle to the Hebrews, chapter 1, is an entire chapter of the Bible devoted to the proposition that Jesus Christ is NOT an angel. The Holy Spirit's human writer of this portion of His Word makes observations and asks rhetorical questions about the nature and role of angels in God's plan, as a way of contrasting the Son of God with them. That the inspired author's intent was to show that Christ is distinct from, and superior to angels is beyond honest dispute.

The Father has many sons with a "small s", but only one unique Son, "capital S". The Son is not created as angels are. The Eternal Divine Father has One Eternal Divine Son. Some Watchtower folk have referred to Scriptures which demonstrate that Christ is not the same PERSON as the Father. They have cited texts that show Jesus' willing delight in submitting Himself to the Father. No argument...those who know Jesus their Lord and God believe those things implicitly.

Basing major doctrines on one or two "prooftext" verses is the lazy Bible student's line of least resistance; by it he builds a hermeneutic house of cards. Overall, the fullness of Scripture distinguishes Three Divine Persons, yet teaches that God is One.

All Christians are baptized according to Christ's command (Matthew 28:19,20) in the One Name (not names, plural) of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Each of these has the same Divine nature and essence - all are absolutely holy, eternal, omniscient, etc.

The word Trinity, the specialized use of the word Person(s), the words nature, essence, et. al. - these are theological terms such as the words theocracy and creationism. The Bible is not a theology text, but such terms are used to systematize some of the Bible's awesome, beautiful, deep truths concerning God's own Being and His ways with His creatures. The truth of God's triune nature (the Trinity) stands in Scripture - although neither the word "trinity" nor the word "triune" appear on a single page. That the King of kings rules over a realm which exists now, and to everlasting, is Biblical truth - although the word theocracy does not appear in the Bible. Creationism is what the Bible teaches as opposed to Darwinism (belief in evolution). However, Scripture does not use the derivative word "creationism" - God doesn't need to say, "now I mean six literal days, not day/ages"...there's no Biblical reason to believe He means anything ELSE than that He made all things in six literal days!

"God is love", wrote the apostle John. How could God eternally BE love as One Person? Can love exist where there is only one person? John doesn't say "God became love" any more than Jesus says "before Abraham was, I came to be". God eternally IS love. Before Abraham was, Christ eternally IS.

In Hebrews chapter one, Christ is called not a copy, but the very shining out (radiance or effulgence) of God's uncreated glory; the EXACT representation of God's nature..."He Who has seen Me, has seen the Father...", He said.

No mere creature, however mighty and angelic, could be all that Immanuel (God with us) is! All that the Bible says "in many portions and in various ways" (see Hebrews 1:1) shows that the Lord Jesus is the Father's equal! "All should honor the Son, even as they honor the Father"..."Let ALL the angels of God worship Him", as they obviously do in Revelation 4 and 5.

The obvious burden on the heart of the writer to the Hebrews has been noted. It is to exalt Christ to the highest possible place. As the meaty and sublime theological reasoning in Hebrews goes forward in the following chapters, Christ is in turn exalted over over human priests, over Moses, over all animal sacrifices, etc. In fact,"The Utter Supremacy of Christ", would be a suitable title for this noble epistle.

It is likewise beyond honest dispute that the worship given to the Lamb, so evident in that glimpse into heaven called Revelation 4 and 5, is anything less than every creature's profound adoration of Deity!!!

Here's a summary of what this series of Bible studies on the nature of the Person of the Lord Jesus Christ has revealed about Him:

He is the Rock of God's people.
He is the First and the Last.
He is the Creator.
He is the only Savior.
He is the Light of the world and of the New Jerusalem, where God dwells with redeemed mankind forever.
He is the Judge and Shepherd.
He is the Great I AM.
He is the King of kings and Lord of lords.
He is the strength of God's people.
He is omnipresent, omnipotent, and omniscient.
He is the Redeemer.
He is unchangeable.
He is the One Who forgives sins.
He is our Prophet, Priest, and King.
He is the Holy One of Israel (God's people).
He is worshipped by the angels of God.
He is the One to Whom God's people give witness.
His name is called "Immanuel" - GOD with us.
He is the Mighty God.
To Him every knee will bow and every tongue swear.
He is the "God of the spirits of the prophets".
He is the Maker of a "new and better covenant".
